Using Rankine’s earth pressures and neglecting the passive resistance, determine the factor of safety with respect to sliding and overturning for the gravity retaining wall shown in Figure P17.4. The unit weight of the concrete is 24 kN/m3. Take ϕ' as 2/3 ϕ'.

If the design requirement is that the eccentricity should be less than B/6, check whether this is satisfied. Find the soil pressures at the toe and the heel.
