Anticipating the next energy crisis, one forward looking company would like to investigate advanced insulation systems for their line of hot-water heaters. They believe that a segment of the market will pay more for a hot-water heater that consumes less energy and is therefore less costly to operate. A possible additional benefit is that a thinner insulation package can allow for additional hot-water capacity and possibly faster recovery. Start with a baseline design for a commercially available hot-water heater. Investigate commercially available insulation systems, determine if any could provide these advantages, and quantify the cost and heat-transfer performance. You may also want to evaluate new insulation concepts that have appeared in the heat-transfer literature.
