What is wrong with stating objectives, either for a project or its end-product, in the following forms:

• To satisfy a political undertaking.

• To demonstrate a government commitment to development.

• To reduce soil erosion.

• To ensure availability and continuity of funds.

• To keep the community informed of progress and expected outcomes.

• To reduce user operating costs and times.

• To increase user safety.

• To reduce maintenance costs.

• To increase load carrying capacity.

These examples show a common way that objectives are stated. Does it really matter if people don’t know how to state objectives properly, from an applied project management viewpoint? As a side comment, it is remarked that most people, including many senior project managers, don’t know how to state objectives properly. Discuss.
In answering this exercise, think in terms of the non-uniqueness of the solution that results where the objective is not capable of being extremised.
