Recently, the Portland District Manager (DM) of a Fortune 500 company's retailing stores got similar complaints from several store managers about a higher than average number of mispicks in store shipments. A mispick occurs when an incorrect scan label is placed on an individual item. For instance, a label that scans as a 36 Pk Kleenex 120 ct" but the item in the box is actually Charmin toilet tissue. Labels are put on the items at the distribution center and then scanned into an electronic pick list before they are put on a truck for delivery. The pick list is sent electronically to the store that is receiving the delivery. Upon arrival, the store team scans each label and compares it to the electronic pick list to ensure all items have arrived in good order. To better analyze this problem following the complaints, the DM observed 10 random shipments of a similar size and recorded the number of mispicks in each shipment (as shown in the table [Data: See an Excel file]). By default, the industry uses z = 3. Select an appropriate control chart for this application. What are the upper and lower control limits? Are the mispicks in shipments from the distribution center out of control? 1 2 A Shipment S 1 B C # of Mispicks 5 3 2 3 3 2 4 4 5 0 6 5 1 7 6 3 8 7 2 9 8 1 10 9 0 10 11 0 12 13 P21.
