Question: 1 . 4 ) [ 3 marks ] A flood - control pumping system has been designed to remove water ( T = 1 0

1.4)[3 marks] A flood-control pumping system has been designed to remove water (T=10C) from a
collection reservoir (Flood basin) and discharge it into a nearby river system (shown in Figure Q1.4).
The total length of piping is 1200m, and the location for the pumping station is 300m along the
length from the inlet at the flood basin. The surface level of the flood basin is 5m below the level of
the river. The pump provides a maximum of 1MW of hydraulic power and the design requirement
is to deliver a maximum water flow of 10m3s. Determine:
a) The minimum diameter of concrete piping (=1cm) required to meet the design flow required.
b) The maximum elevation above the flood basin that the pump can be located, if local
atmospheric pressure is 101.325kPa, using the pump information from Figure Q1.4b.
c) Would replacing the inlet filter in Fig. Q1.4a with one with a Cv of 150000galmin.0.5 result in
an increase or decrease of the total flowrate?
