(1) An asbestos pad is rectangle in cross section, measuring 3 cm

(1) An asbestos pad is rectangle in cross section, measuring 3 cm x 10 cm on a side at its small end, increasing linearly to 6 x 20 cm on a side at the large end. The pad is 20 cm high. If the small end is held at 650 K and the large end at 350 K, what heat-flow rate will be obtained if the four sides are insulated? Assume one-dimensional heat conduction. The thermal conductivity of asbestos may be taken as 0.18 W/m K. (2) Solve Problem (1) for the case of the larger cross section exposed to the higher temperature and the smaller end held at 350 K. (3). Solve Problem (1) if the asbestos pad has a 2.0 cm (diameter) steel bolt running through its center. Steel k is 40 W/m.K.
