1. Answer the following questions: (i) Growth curve was studied using bacteria to produce microbial protein. Normally bacteria require media components for its growth. One of the major component is valine. 500 kg of valine was added to fermentation medium in a bioreactor to perform growth studies. The concentration of cells in 500 L of medium was found to be 500 kg/m'. Calculate the percentage of nitrogen in bacteria. (6 marks) (ii) A nutrition company decided to produce energy drink for body builders. It is desired to produce 1.5 m' of energy drink containing 35% protein, 15% carbohydrate and the rest water by mixing 3 streams A, B and C on a pilot scale. Stream A contains 45% protein, 12% carbohydrate and the rest water. Stream B contains 40% protein and the rest water. Stream C contains 30% carbohydrate and the rest water. All the percentages are by weight. Calculate the quantities of streams A, B and C required for mixing if the density of energy drink is 1 g/mL. (4 marks) 1.
