1. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE SITUATION Situation Roughly 40% of golf cart accidents involve a person falling out of the cart. Dozens of children are killed or seriously injured every year. On a typical golf cart, the driver sits on the left-hand side of a bench seat behind the steering wheel and the passenger sits on the right-hand side. A common scenario for a passenger ejection accident occurs when the cart is turned sharply to the left and centrifugal forces cause the passenger to slide to the right leading to ejection. Drivers are less likely to be ejected because of holding onto the steering wheel and the driver anticipates when he or she is about to initiate a turn. te Problem Golf carts do not have doors or seatbelts because of the need to allow passengers to enter and exit the vehicle frequently, and with ease, while playing golf. Therefore, the sides of the cart are open (as shown in the image). Most golf carts have a short bar on each side of the bench seat designed to serve as a handhold to ease entry and exit for the driver and passenger. The bar can help prevent sliding out of the seat, however, the height of the bar causes it to contact the person at the hip (near the body's center of gravity) providing a fulcrum about which an ejected passenger's body rotate (as shown in the image). This actually makes passenger ejection out of the golf cart more likely and causes passengers to land on their head more often leading to serious head trauma. The Innovation Challenge Needed is a golf cart design making it less likely for a passenger to be ejected without interfering with convenient entry and exit. Simply adding seatbelts, doors or increasing the height of the bar are not acceptable solutions because golfers will not tolerate these impediments to entry and exit. You are required to come up with three (3) Level 3 innovative ideas. However, you are urged to come up with more than three. Each idea submitted will be evaluated. If an idea does not solve or improve the problem, is impractical, or too costly to implement, it will be discarded. Your grade depends on how many high-quality ideas you produce.
