1 CASE STUDY: Going Mobile Background Remember that you have been hired as a project manager at a large Financial Services company. The company has a large portion of both the insurance and investments market within Canada. However, many of the companys websites and client facing portals are aging. Plus there is little mobile device applications or mobile options offered to clients. Because of this, your boss, Michael Scott, asked you to manage the project of creating a new mobile app. This project has a $75,000 budget, will solve customer unhappiness, upgrade company technology and includes four streams of work: Procurement of the needed software and resources for development purposes Creation of the iOS and Android mobile applications Deployment of the iOS and Android applications to the app stores Marketing and Communication of the applications to clients and potential customers Project Team Members Business Analyst - Jim Halpert Marketing Specialist - Pam Beesly Designer - Dwight Schrute Developer/Tester - Kelly Kapoor Other Project Details For both the creation of the iOS and Android applications, business requirements, followed by the design, development and quality testing will need to be completed. The company has iOS experience within its staff already but Android development is new to the company. As the project manager, you worry about the Android application timelines slipping compared to the rest of the project or that many software defects will be found affecting quality. In both cases, Kelly, will have lots of application testing to do. Procuring the needed software for development is estimated to be a small aspect of the project as everything is open source. With Dwights help, all you will likely need to do is verify that the software has been installed properly on the project team members computers. Although important, deploying the applications to the app stores is a fairly standard process that involves planning, obtaining regulatory permissions and technical 2 deployment. From experience, you know that these tasks just need to be monitored closely as they are time specific and need to be completed at certain times throughout the project. Checks for application submission guidelines and availability of project resources will need to be completed. Lastly, marketing and communication will involve creating online marketing ads highlighting the release of the new application, an email campaign asking clients to download the new application and a product demo at the company townhall. All of these materials need to be perfect. Any grammatical, political/social miscues or presentation errors will have a negative impact on the applications being used by clients (existing or new). Other Information Remember that the Designer (Dwight Schrute) disagrees with the decision to create a new mobile app. Dwight is a long time employee, was involved with the creation of the original websites and sees this project as the elimination of his careers work. You will need to manage Dwight closely while keeping in mind he is key to the proper design and architecture of the new mobile app. The last team member (Kelly Kapoor), a new developer/tester, is brand new to the company and comes highly recommended. Although you do not foresee any issues, you will need to make sure she is adhering to company policies and delivering high quality work. The project is nearing the end of the planning phase and you are getting ready to start monitoring/controlling in the execution phase of the project. You know there are many considerations you need to account for related to timeline, quality, communications and resourcing but are excited that actual work on the mobile app is starting.
