(3) The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has devised a
formula to calculate if a package is too heavy to lift. The Canadian Centre for
Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) has on its website a tool to calculate the
Recommended Weight Limit (RWL) with respect to a package. Find the tool on the
website and:
(i) Determine the RWL with respect to a package that must be lifted by a
worker onto a shelf that is 40cm in front of where he or she is standing
(there is a barrier the worker must reach over). Using both hands, the worker
picks up the package (which has handles) from a shelf 30cm from the floor
and moves it onto a shelf which is 130cm from the floor. The worker is
standing while doing the lift. The lift is repeated every five minutes for just
under an hour. Show your work ... in other words, explain the variables you
used to determine the RWL.
(ii) How does your answer in (i) above change if the worker is required to use
only one hand (ie other hand is being otherwise used)?.

217.1 Everyone who undertakes, or has the authority, to direct how
another person does work or performs a task is under a legal duty to take

person, arising from that work or task.
However, there have been criticisms that relatively few charges are laid under this law
and even fewer convictions. Using information from the internet, describe the event
that instigated the addition of this section into the Criminal Code, and then complete a
table such as the following with respect to six cases in which charges were laid under
the section.
