People Express started with a highly successful service - extremely low fares and excellent customer service. Travelers enjoyed flying an airline with enthusiastic and committed staff. Sensing a huge demand and wanting to make the service even more attractive, People Express invested heavily in more airplanes and more routes. Business boomed. Employees became unable to handle the influx of customers. There was not enough time to find and train the special kind of person who typified and original staff, so temporary help was hired. These new employees did not interact with customers according to People's standards. Finally, with crowds at the ticket counters and disgruntled flight attendants, the level of People's customers service declined below that of its competitors. Even with low fares, People saw its market share dwindle away.
