During the COVID-19 pandemic,health care professionals noted an overall decrease inpatient visits. Patients who might otherwise have sought care for non emergency conditions opted not to see their health provider out of fear of contracting COVID -19 or because they did not want to burden

the already overwhelmed health care system. Many of these patients delayed seeking care until their non -emergency condition required an urgent visit to the Emergency Department(ED).

At QWG, Hospital Providers are noting this trend amongst patients with chronic skin wounds. Prior to COVID-19, these patients would visit their provider or qwg Wound Clinic for treatment, including specialized wound dressings, debridement, edema management, and other medical interventions. Now, many are delaying care and their wounds are not being treated. These patients are presenting to the ED with advanced wound issues and serious complications including infection and sepsis.
