Before we had our two small babies, my wife and I went to the movies often. We would get there early to get a good seat and to watch the previews. When she picked the film, the preview was often my favourite part... They eventually introduced that cineplex pre-show where you had to compete with the theatre to answer questions. We also had fun with that, so again, we would get there earlier than before to enjoy it. The visuals, the smell, the service, it was all very appealing to us and kept us wanting to go back.

Instead of eating most of the popcorn before the previews, we always bought way too much. We considered it a treat to go to the movies, so the few extra dollars we spent were no big deal. I believe that's the mindset that many people have when going to the movies. To be able to spend a day with your spouse and spend less than $100 on a date is a win. If I didn't spend $50 on the movies, We would've spent it elsewhere that night. I think that is the intentional mindset the marketing for the movie theatre has achieved. It is a staple 'date night' entertainment, not just some cheap microwave popcorn from the store.The marketing team really nailed the atmosphere and how people visualize the name cineplex.

2- Yes, theaters have a captive marketplace, because no other foods are allowed in. If you sit in the theater, you will hear and see (and smell) people eating and drinking, you will get hungry and/or thirsty. There is group pressure to also purchase products so that you fit in as a member of the audience.
