1. Gravity does not have most complex sound design ever made -- the sound is used quite sparingly-- yet it won the 2013 Oscar for both Sound Editing and Sound Mixing. Choose a scene from the film, and explain how sound contributes to the film's meaning. For each sound, you discuss, be sure to identify the category of sound (music, dialogue, sound effects) and whether each one is diegetic or nondiegetic, onscreen or off screen, internal or external.

2. In Darren Aronofsky's Requiem for a Dream, the editing techniques and post-production effects (manipulating the speed of shots, for example, or CGI effects) combine to create a rather devastating look at the effects of drug abuse. Pick a scene, or an editing/post-production technique, and discuss the effect/s it had on your reading of the film.
