1. Imagine the following scenario: You are working on the Sunday crossword puzzle with a friend when suddenly you come upon the following clue: 9 Across: "anesthesiologists' first number" Looking at the puzzle that you have partially completed, you can see that the clue is five letters long. Right now, it is filled in as the following: h_r. You are confident that the 'h' and the 'r' are correct from the down clues you have filled in so far. After several minutes of trying different combinations of letters to spell out different numbers, you are both stumped. Finally, your mom walks in and takes a look at the puzzle. After a few seconds she laughs, and says, "that 9 Across was tricky!" You frown at her. "How do you know that one? There is absolutely no number that fits in that space. "Well, if you mean numbers like five, six, seven, nine, no. But if you mean 'number' like 'a numbing agent,' then that would make a lot more sense with 'anesthesiologists." "A-ha! I've got it now!" your friend says. "It's 'ether!" "Exactly," your mom says to him. "Ether is the substance the first anesthesiologists used to put people under before operations back in the 1800's. Not a num-ber you would count, but it will definitely make you numb!" You fill in the blanks of the puzzle and move on-without your mom's and your friend's help, you doubt you would have ever figured out that one. How did each of the following terms apply to the scenario described above? Algorithm • Heuristic • Insight Fixation . Framing Semantics 1.
