1. Kindly answer this as soon as possible. Urgent and answer all parts will be thankful. Read the following passage and answer questions at the end. A boat crash, threats from gun-toting poachers, and a boat of life-threatening, flesh-eating disease. These were the last things Rob Stewart expected when he joined members of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) aboard the Farley Mowat on a four-month expedition in April 2002. The crash occurred while the crew of the ship Farley Mowat chased the Varadero I. The Varadero was a fish boat whose crew had been arrested for shark fishing in Guatemalan waters. And just when the Farley Mowat was ready to halt their escape with stink bombs and other non-violent methods, the unexpected happened. A wave thrust the Varadero into the side of the Farley Mowat. The Farley Mowat had been patrolling the waters around both Cocos Island and Galapagos Islands. These are World Heritage sites and provide critical habitats for marine wildlife, especially sharks. Rob, an experienced diver and cinematographer, and his film crew were on board to capture the beauty of sharks in their natural environment for a 13-part, high-definition TV series. At the same time, they were documenting Sea Shepherd's efforts to protect sharks from illegal fishing. Sharks are caught for their fins, which are cut off (and their bodies dumped overboard) and sold for shark fin soup. Though many countries have banned shark finning, millions of sharks are illegally harvested each year. The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the marine environment, with a focus on halting illegal fishing activities. "Most of our workforce are volunteers," says Starlet Lum, Onshore Operations Director. "Volunteers range from 19 years old to early 30s." Most SSCS volunteers become part of the crew on the flagship, the Farley Mowat. "The average volunteer commitment is about six months to a year," says Starlet, and she adds, "Many returns." For Rob, it was a perfect match. Passionate about ensuring the survival of shark populations, he has been using his biology degree and filmmaking skills to improve education and awareness of sharks. "Sharks were around 100 million years before the dinosaurs. They are some of the most successful animals on the planet," says Rob. "But today, sharks have much more to fear from us, than us from them." The chance to join Sea Shepherds' voyage to shark waters was a unique opportunity. The chase was just one part of an adventuresome voyage. When the crew learned that Guatemalan authorities wanted to capture their ship instead of the Varadero, Captain Paul Watson and the crew of the Farlev Mowat sailed to Costa Rica, then on to Panama. While the legal battles raged in Costa Rica over the crash, Rob had been onshore, filming illegal shark finning operations, until threats at gunpoint from the poachers forced him to flee with the ship. Then, in Panama, Rob's leg became infected with the flesh-eating disease and he was hospitalized for seven days while the Farley Mowat set sail without him. SSCS continued conservation activities through the Galapagos, Tahiti, and Auckland, New Zealand, arriving in early September 2002. Rob returned from the South Pacific with footage of shark finning and poaching off Cocos, but more importantly of hammerheads, thriving in their natural habitat. Now, more than ever, he is determined to educate the public about the true beauty and nature of sharks and their importance to the world's oceans, as well as to dispel the unfavorable myths that sharks are vicious and often attack people in the water. "[Volunteering for Sea Shepherd] definitely changed my life," agrees another volunteer. "I gained so much experience." Although Sea Shepherd crew members must be atlas 19 years old (for legal reasons), the demand is growing for onshore volunteers of any age to help with educational and fundraising activities. "I have a 15-year old volunteer who contacted me from Europe," says Starlet. "He's working on a Web site design for us. Teens do some of the best Web work." Donating your time is an excellent way to support Sea Shepherd's activities. "If we didn't have our volunteers, our ships wouldn't be out there," states Starlet. Organizations across Canada, the U.S., and internationally need youth volunteers. Are you ready to make a difference? Taking the first step can be challenging, but one volunteer offers this advice, "If you want it, go for it, and learn to roll with the punches. 1. Why did Rob join the crew onboard the Farley Mowat? 2. What were 3 dangers Rob experienced during his time with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society? 3. What two facts or events in the article did you find the most interesting? Explain your choices. 4. a) In your opinion, what personality traits do volunteers have? Consider Rob Stewart in your answer. b) Would you ever consider volunteering and going on a similar adventure? Why or why not? c) What personal characteristics (character traits) do you have that would make you a good (or bad) volunteer? Explain. 1. Kindly answer this as soon as possible.
