Question:
1. Select an organization within which you can conduct research in order to complete this assignment. The company must have a person responsible for the HR function. Once you have decided who you will be interviewing, send me the name, position, and contact information for the individual you will be interviewing along with the company’s name and address. This must be a Canadian company.
Review the critical path for the deadline for your group to submit your company and interviewee information.
2. You will work in your CATME groups. A Group discussion board will be created for this assignment to help facilitate your communication for this assignment.
This is a complex group project. Clarity of group members’ roles, responsibilities, and deadlines is critical to your group’s success, as is clarity around how you will communicate with one another. In order to ensure your success, as a group you should first do the following:
- Decide how you will communicate about your work as a group. A discussion board has been created for you (Assignment #3: Culminating Interview of an HR Practitioner). However, you are not limited to using this board. As a group, decided what is the best communication to coordinate your work
- Decide upon roles and responsibilities. This means establishing who will complete which tasks (e.g. who will take on a specific part, who will be responsible for submitting the document, etc.)
- Establish deadlines. These means being clear about when each task should be done. As a group, be sure to leave yourself enough time to edit the work as a whole to ensure it is a well-edited document that speaks with a unified voice.
3. As a group, once you are clear about how you will conduct your work, begin to complete your work (Step 2 - Parts A - E below).
Part A: Company Research
Conduct an in-depth interview (via email or in-person) with the HR manager or supervisor (or someone in a comparable position) to familiarize your team with the company and HR-related practices. Obtain information about the company’s mission statement, values, strategic goals/direction, and other points of interest you think are relevant to your project. Some of this data may also be obtained via the internet or printed documentation available from the company.
Part A should include a list of the interview questions that you asked and the manager’s corresponding answers (EACH GROUP IS TO REVIEW DRAFT QUESTIONS PRIOR TO INTERVIEW). The interview results should be presented in a typed version in your final report. Also, include the name, title, and business phone number of your company contact (a business card is acceptable). Make sure all interview questions are relevant to the project, that is, they provide you with information to help your team complete sections B - E in the assignment.
Part B: Performance Appraisal System
Select one classification of employees compensated with either wages or salaries at the management, professional or non-management level.
Review the job description for this classification and analyze the current performance appraisal system. Suggest changes or improvements to the current system. If there is not a system for this particular job classification, then design an effective appraisal program, studied in this course, which is aligned with the corporate direction. Provide a rationale for the performance management system that you designed. (Refer to Chapter 8 in your textbook).
Include a copy of the job description or any supporting documentation in your final report. The job description can be one you obtain or one you create for the chosen position.
Part C: Compensation
Identify and explain the current types of pay incentive programs for this position or, if none exist, what incentive system would you recommend for this job classification to motivate them to high performance. Support your recommendations with references to theories of incentive plans and why you believe such incentive plans are beneficial to this particular company. (Refer to Chapter 9 in your textbook)
Part D: Benefits
Identify and explain the types of discretionary employee benefits and services that currently exist. Make four recommendations for changes to current systems or four recommendations for the creation of new systems. Support your recommendations with references to theories on benefits and services provided in the course text (Refer to Chapter 10 in your textbook).
Part E: Implementation Plan
The implementation plan should include specific techniques and strategies that company management can use to effectively implement your recommendations in Parts B, C, and D. Identify and explain one possible barrier to implementation.
