1. The most obvious answer on why trash accumulates in the gyre is because of the ocean currents and marine debris. The debris, mostly plastic gets trapped in these areas which are known for being garbage patches in the ocean. Because of the circular motion of the gyres, it creates a trap to where when plastic and other debris gets stuck in the middle meaning there is no escape. A solution to prevent trash ending up in the Pacific gyre is making sure to never litter. Wind carries trash to the ocean then gets swept away to the gyres. Also making sure trash and plastics are separated. Picking up trash you see when walking somewhere can make a big impact in long-term situations like not having as much trash in the gyre.
