The story explores the complexities of end of life issues (family, self awareness) and comments on what it means to be self-reliant: the good and the bad. Cornelia refuses to ask others for help and would rather commit suicide than impose on her daughter. Is being independent also being without love? These are some of the questions crucial to the story --- all told in the genre of realistic fiction.
