Legitimate power is derived from societal standards that require the target of influence to obey the influencing agent's request or instruction. I am a police officer so the main power base I use is the Legitimate Power Base.Officers do not have the ability to prescribe tasks, but they do have the official authority to issue tickets or arrest violators in order for the judge to award punishment. I believe that being a police officer we can not use the coercive power base at all because that can get us into trouble. Coercive power usually results in short-term obedience, but it leads to dysfunctional conduct in the long run (Steensma & Milligen,2003). I also believe that as police officers we have expert power base because we have a highly specialized skill set or a particularly high degree of knowledge in what we do every day and how we do our job. I believe that sometimes my department heads use reward power base because sometimes they promise us as a shift or individuals a reward like what shift we request or something similar if we do something they want. We have good interactions with citizens as cops in a small community, and some municipalities have programs where officers are encouraged to mix with citizens to foster healthy relationships. These ideas provide referents more authority over followers (Steensma & Milligen, 2003). In order to do the best job possible in controlling criminals, police personnel must have authority and employ influence through expert power, referent power, lawful power, and coercive power. A police officer assaulting his relationship partner by utilizing his authority abilities, on the other hand, knows exactly what he is doing, and it is abuse."}
