THE IMPACT OF ACCOUNTING INFORMATION SYSTEMS ON SMALL-MEDIUM ENTERPRISES (SMEs) Introduction Small-medium enterprises (SMEs) are recognized as one of the main contributors to economic, development and employment growth. Despite it play a major role in todays world economy, SMEs is well known having limitation and acceptance barriers in adopting a new technology although the revolution of internet and communication channel has changed the way people conduct business today. The accounting information system has been on a rise recently. It facilitates decision making to issues in the organization. If management feeds the accounting information system with wrong input then management will take wrong decisions because the output is not accurate. Moreover, it is considered a competitive advantage for organizations with the modernized accounting information systems. Accounting information systems (AIS) is considered as an important organizational mechanism that is critical for the effectiveness of decision making and controls in organizations. AIS on SMEs performance bring about cost reduction, improving quality and effective decision making. Ismail and King (2007) explains determinant of information systems implementation such as IT sophistication, owner commitment and IT strategy of AIS implementation in SMEs. Statement of the problem The primary purpose of this study is to examine critically whether accounting information is an important consideration in the overall performance of SMEs using a research done in Nigeria. The secondary purpose of this study is to examine whether the level of skilfulness of the accountant also affects the overall performance of SMEs. Objective of the study The main objective of the study is to evaluate the impact of accounting information systems on SMEs. While the specific objectives are to; Examine the benefits derived by SMEs from the adoption of accounting information system Examine the relationship between the adoption of accounting information system and the profitability of SMEs Examine the relationship between the adoption of accounting information systems and the overall performance of SMEs. Research questions I. What is the relationship between the adoption of accounting information systems and the overall performance of SMEs? II. What are the benefits derived by SMEs from the adoption of accounting information systems? III. What is the relationship between the adoption of accounting information systems and the profitability of SMEs? Hypothesis of the study The hypotheses for this study are stated in null forms which are: 1. HO: There is no significant relationship between the use of accounting information systems and the profit after of SMEs. 2. There is no significant relationship between accounting information system and the overall performances of SMEs 3. There is no significant relationship between the adoption of accounting information and the benefit derived from it by SMEs Justification for the study There are few researches that have been carried out related to this study such as Sajady, Dastgir, and Nejad (2008) who examined the evaluation of the effectiveness of accounting information systems on SMES scaled companies, Omar and Ali (2012), who examined the impact of the accounting information systems in planning, controlling and decision-making process in small businesses, Grande, (2001) who explored the impact accounting information systems has on performance measures. Significance of the study The research work aims at determining the impact of accounting information systems on SMEs operating in Kwara state. Due to insignificant time and other important resources, it was not able to comb through all the SMEs operating in the whole of Kwara State but a representative sample was drawn out of the population in order to achieve the research objectives.
