1960s Vietnam Protest Songs Assignment
Here are the guidelines for your “Vietnam Protest Songs” assignment. You will choose 1 protest/anti-Vietnam War song from the 1960s or 1970s. You will do the following:
1) Copy/Paste the lyrics of the song onto a word document. I know we are doing this digitally, but I want you to highlight the specific parts of the song that are particularly making a statement about any aspect of the Vietnam War. This is almost like making an annotation of the song lyrics.
2) 1st Paragraph= Below your copied/pasted & highlighted song lyrics I want you, in a paragraph format explain/describe the following: a. The genre of music your song encompasses & the year the song was written & released b. What is the message of your song? (Obviously the song is against the Vietnam War, but what are the reasons? Think of the tone of the song. Is it sad, angry, defiant? c. Choose 1-2 lines of the song that you feel send the strongest message to you. Why did you choose these lines? What message or messages do they send? What is powerful about the lines you chose?
3) 2nd Paragraph= In a paragraph format, you will answer these two final questions. a. Why do you believe so much music was written about the Vietnam War? b. Why is music a powerful and effective form of protest?
