2.1 Identify the critical soil and/or rock parameters required from the geotechnical investigation for the following estimations:
(a) Estimating the average settlement below a flexible foundation on saturated clay. Refer to the diagramme below.
(b) Basic pile assessment for a pile socket in rock.Refer to the diagramme below (3)
2.2 The nett applied pressure on a foundation (dimensions are 2,4 m 1,2 m (L B)) with a depth of 800 mm is 150kNm2. Determine the elastic settlement at the centre of the foundation in a granular soil. Use the following as design inputs:
Poisson's ratio of the soil =0.25
Soil modulus of elasticity =10.5MPa
Shape factor =0.65
Refer to Addendum A for the required graphs and formulas.
2.3 A 6m(L)2m(B) foundation with a depth of 0,8m is to be constructed on a saturated clay. The depth between the bottom of the foundation and a rigid rock layer is 7 m . The nett applied load per unit area of the foundation is 180kNm2. The clay has the following parameters:
Overconsolidation ratio =3
Undrained shear strength of the soil cu=150kNm2
?PI=35 Estimate the elastic settlement of the foundation.
Use the average of the applicable range from Table 1 to determine the -value.
Refer to Addendum A for the required graphs and formulas.
