Transportation Management Project B - Atco Structures

Background:

ATCO Ltd. is a Canadian success story. It is part of a family of companies that operate utility, energy storage and distribution businesses as well modular structures for industries operating domestically and internationally. A full outline of the scope of Atco's enterprise can be found at https://www.atco.com.

One of its divisions, Atco Structures & Logistics, "is a pioneer in the modular construction industry, with projects on five continents and manufacturing facilities in Canada, the United States and Australia. A part of the ATCO Group of Companies, (it) provides award-winning, turnkey bundled solutions with a suite of products and services. ....Atco Structures division specializes in workforce housing, temporary relocatable structures, permanent offsite construction and innovative modular facilities" (Atco Structures, 2018).

Atco Structures has just been awarded a contract to build several structures for a small mining camp in Peru. The structure package includes one modular site office (12'X 60'), two washroom buildings (12'X 30') and a five unit "drill camp" with each unit being 12'X 60' (total area X 5). The Assignment:

Your team of transportation specialists has been hired by Atco Structures (Calgary) to determine the most efficient, least cost transportation options to move these structures from their construction site in Calgary, Alberta to a port in Lima, Peru. The shipment of the entire order will leave the Calgary facility on March 1, 2023. The Peruvian customer will make its own arrangements to move the structures from the ship to the mining site and will take care of all the customs and duty charges to permit entry of the product into the country. Therefore, you are only concerned with the modes of transport and costs associated with moving these structures through Canada to a point from which they will be loaded and shipped to the port in Peru.

5. Reports/assignments with a team work component will be graded on the following basis: Level of individual contribution of group members, cooperation among group members and quality of contribution to the group. This component will usually involve a peer evaluation process undertaken by the group members themselves. "Rough work" from all parties will, if necessary be evaluated. Based upon this assessment the final grade for a student may be adjusted by up to 40% of the total grade.
