2.2 Project: Logical Network Design Note: This is one of two "mostly writing" assignments you will have in this class. Every other project will still be a lot of work but minimal things to turn in. Please do your best. I do not expect you to spend more than 2 1/2 hours on it. Try to get it done in that time, but also be wise with your time management and don't dwell on a single item. There are no right or wrong answers in this project (well, there are, but I won't penalize you for them). IT students seem to have difficulty creating proposals, but this will become an increasingly important part of your job as you progress in your IT career! Students always ask, "How long should it be?" The answer is, "long enough!" As a help to get you started, included is a presentation about Executive Summaries. You are an IT intern for a software development company designing and supporting proprietary software for real estate appraisals. The company has outgrown its current location (SLC Administration Office) and has purchased a five-year lease on a new building in the same business park but a quarter-mile away. The building will house a classroom and a comfortable lounge to support employee and customer training. In addition, the company is opening both Ogden and Provo offices. Currently, the internet is provided by an ISP in Salt Lake City. At present, the company plans to share this connection between all sites. A site diagram and computer requirements for each is shown below: Your supervisor noted your interest and background in computer networking and has asked you to create a proposal listing all the necessary network equipment to build out a network infrastructure for the new building. This should be a high-level proposal and include the major switching and router equipment and any necessary media converters. Instructions 1. Review the project overview and desired outcomes. 2. Included with the project is a Packet Tracer file with the above diagram as a background. When completed, this will serve as the network diagram. The end goal is to have a logical diagram that shows the correct hardware and how everything is connected. 3. Research the equipment that you will need to complete the network topology. 4. Using Packet Tracer, place the devices in the respective sites and connect the devices with the correct cables. 1. Site requirements are listed on the topology. 2. When complete, all sites should have an internet connection. 3. Devices do not need to be configured or addressed this week. This will happen in Week 3. 5. Assumptions 1. You do not need to create PCs for all connections. If a PC represents more than one computer, label this on the diagram (Example PC2x15). 2. You do not need to concern yourself with internal building wiring. You may assume that each facility has a small network closet to facilitate the network devices and internal connections. 3. In their default configuration, Routers and Bridges may not support the connections required by the project. You may have to add or change modules to accommodate requirements. 4. All Ogden computers (wired and wireless) need to communicate with each other. 5. All Training computers (wired and wireless) need to be able to communicate with each other 6. 4 of the 10 computers and 1 printer in the Administration building need to be on the training network. 7. SLC Administration should host the company website and DNS server (they may be the same server) 8. The SLC Router should act as the DHCP server for the entire network. 9. The Administration Building and the Training Facility link must support Gigabit speed. 10.The other 6 computers, the remaining printer, and the wireless network in the Administration building need to be able to communicate with each other 11.All Provo computers (wired and wireless) need to communicate with each other. 12.The ISP will be represented by a cluster already placed on the Packet Tracer file. It may be connected via fiber to Provo or SLC. 6. Create a proposal (Executive Summary) to go with the network diagram. The proposal should include: 1. A cover sheet of your choosing. 2. A brief description of the scope of the project. 3. A summary of the tasks and the efforts you took to meet the tasks 4. A list of all the equipment needed for the diagram by site. 5. The network diagram which identifies each of the key devices with their locations in the network. 7. Save the proposal as a word document with the following file naming convention: Last Name, First Initial Week 2 Logical Network Design, for example, SmithC Week 2 Logical Network Design. 8.
