3. Do your own research on PCBs. Do your findings clarify their status as being so hazardous they must be removed? Or are they best left where they have settled? The status of PCB's as dangerous have been challenged by GE and others. A study regarding the effect of PCB on cancer concluded that, due to the dynamic and complex nature of PCB's, there isn't enough data to determine that PCB's causes cancer (Cogliano, 2016). Other studies have concluded that PCB's are, in fact harmful to animals and the environment as a whole. For example, a study published in 2016 showed that Mallard ducks in the Hudson river exceeded tolerance levels for PCB's in poultry (Madden, 2016). Another study showed that the foraging behavior of bats near the Hudson who had elevated levels of PCB's and who consumed insects with elevated levels of PCB's were affected (Hooton, Dzal, Veselka & Fenton, 2016). GE and some environmentalist argued that dredging of the Hudson river should not be done, claiming that the process of dredging would kick up the PCB's from the river bottom and only serve to make the pollution worse. However, recent dredging of the Hudson proved that GE's predictions were unfounded (Enck, 2016)
