Kagiso wants to see her superior and emails him to ask for an appointment. She writes: "Dear Mr Ngwenya, I would like to make an appointment to see you regarding my future at this company. What day and time would be convenient? Regards, Kagiso." Using the elements already explained, the broad context is work, but this can be narrowed down to Kagiso's future in the company; the message is a request for an appointment; Kagiso is the sender; Mr Ngwenya is the receiver, the channel is email, and the code is formal English. Note that there are at least two more elements to the communication process. In this particular case, the missing element is feedback. Kagiso's email would be meaningless if Mr Ngwenya didn't respond. Another element is de- coding. Kagiso has written her email in code (formal English), but Mr Ngwenya must be able to decode (read and understand) it successfully in order for the communication to be effective. Another element is what is called noise. Noise is anything which disrupts (or prevents) the transmission or decoding of a communication in any way. There might be a power failure and her email does not reach the receiver. f
