The workforce was mostly male, with only 30% made up of women (Women's roles on the Home Front). However, when WWI began, many men went off to war. According to a document published by the Social Security Administration in 1942 called "Employment of Women in War Production," "During the war period of 1914-18, more women entered the labor force than ever before hey worked not only as clerks and saleswomen but also as lathe operators, punch-press perators, single and multiple-spindle-drill-press operators, grinders, riveting-machine operators, inspectors, crane operators, assemblers, and case makers." They began to work In factories and the food industry. They took on jobs that had once been filled only by men. These women, many of whom would become known as flappers, were reluctant to leave the workforce when the war ended. According to Emily Spivack in "The History of the Flapper Part 1," when men returned from the war and wanted their jobs back, "Women though, who had joined the workforce while men were at war, had tasted the possibility of ife beyond homemaking and weren't ready to relinquish their jobs" (Spivack). According to this quote, during WWI, many women realized they enjoyed the idea of working outside the home and they wanted to continue to do so. Working outside the home meant that women had their own disposable income instead of being dependent solely on their husbands. They also experienced new freedoms and responsibilities in these jobs. One of the long term effects of women entering the workforce out of necessity during WWI was a whole generation of young women tasted freedom and self-fulfillment in the workplace, two priorities that would become foundational in the rise of the flappers.
