These first two questions will try to assist in giving you an understanding of how you can model structures in different ways and how the distribution of forces will or won't change as structural parameters are changed. It will also show that it is possible to analyse a structure using simplified models rather than requiring an entire frame to be analysed every time. Note that you shouldn't include notional horizontal loads (NHLs) in calculations to compare results between the different methods. However, NHLs must be included in a proper design.
TYPICAL ELEVATION
For the structure above, the
For the layout and loading shown above, calculate the bending moments in the frame due to wind loading in the following ways:
a) Conduct a global analysis of the frame accounting for all the dominant load combinations. Use computer software such as Prokon or any suitable software. As an interest, compare the results of a linear elastic and second-order analysis.
b) Using a hand-calculation method to calculate bending moments for the entire structure for the wind loads only according to Reynolds' Fig. 2.62 guidelines. Show these on a diagram and compare results with a Prokon frame analysis or any suitable software with the same loading. Look at similarities and differences in results and what might have caused these. The results from this wind analysis would be combined with the analyses of Question 2 to obtain moments accounting for both vertical and lateral loads.
c) Calculate the NHL for each level. This doesn't need to be applied; just be aware of it.
Calculate the bending moments in the beam on the first-floor level, considering only imposed and permanent loads, using the following methods:
a) A global frame analysis in Prokon or any suitable software.
b) A sub-frame analysis of the beam with the columns above and below
c) A sub-frame of only the end two beams
d) A continuous elastic beam
Draw the results on a bending moment diagram and compare. Look at similarities and differences in results and what might have caused these. Even though this is a very simple structure, and most buildings you design will be irregular, it still will provide insight into modelling options. Look at how results would change if you redistributed bending moments.
3. Consider the layout shown below. Show on the plan views where shear walls must be added such that the structure becomes fully laterally supported (i.e. a non-sway structure). Shear
