Certification is obtained by taking an exam. Applicants must show evidence of education and/or experience before being allowed to take the exam. Recertification occurs every two to three years, either by retaking an exam or demonstrating attendance at a specific number of skill-building activities. While earning certification is important for establishing credibility in HR, the recertification process is equally important, as it ensures that individuals maintain up-to-date skills and knowledge. There are several types of certifications available to HR professionals. HRCI Certification. The Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) sponsors a Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR).
