Upon graduation she had accepted a job with a medium size company manufacturing a variety of computer circuit boards in Richmond, BC. Her title was Assistant Controller responsible for accounts payable and payroll. For the first 6 months Kathleen thoroughly enjoyed her job. She got along well with her employees and peers but her boss, Jennifer, was distant, spoke little and was frequently dismissive. Kathleen was satisfied with her salary and received a scheduled 10% increase on her 6 month anniversary. Company policy provided that after 1 year her salary would be reviewed coincidental with an annual performance review. As part of her duties Kathleen was responsible to calculate and process quarterly employee bonuses in the manufacturing, sales/marketing and research/quality control departments. The Accounting and Finance department did not participate in the bonus plan. This did not seem to bother her staff but Kathleen was troubled by this fact. In addition, she also approved travel and expense accounts, including trips for sales employees to attend conferences and seminars at exotic locations if they met predetermined targets. The sales department was almost entirely made up of men. These "boondoggles were always thought to be a waste of money by the accountants but had a long history and were thought to be important to retaining sales staff. As time went on Kathleen's displeasure with the bonus program and questionable sales junkets grew. Her department was being put under increasing pressure to lower costs. Her boss was increasingly distant and there were rumours she was leaving to join a competitor. Kathleen felt she was doing a good job but her first performance review was 5 months away. As she processed bonus payments and expense accounts she was becoming discouraged and began to wonder if this company was actually a good place to work.
