(a) A relatively flat site, with good access, is to be developed for a new eight
storey office development. The site dimensions are approximately 100m
by 100m and the approximate size of the proposed development is 60x
10m. A desk study has determined that the site was formerly terraced
housing, replaced in 20th century by depots, warehouses and small works.
In addition, it is thought that the ground comprises roughly 1-2 metres of
man-made fill material, overlying several layers of dense sand and clay
layers down to approximately 20m, where there is a bedrock of fissured
sandstone.
Briefly, describe the ground investigation you would propose for the site
with due consideration of value for money. Your proposal should include
any non-invasive geophysical techniques (if appropriate), the number and
type of invasive investigations needed (including stating the equipment
you will specify to do this investigation). In addition, you should provide
information on any in situ testing or sampling you propose.
You must provide justification for all your choices in order to gain
marks.
(Please note you are NOT required to provide descriptions of any of the
equipment you propose or descriptions of how the tests are conducted or
describe how samples are collected, although appropriate methods
should be identified.)
