A class is planning to make a vegetable garden for science class. The size of the garden will be 72 square feet. If the shape of the garden is a rectangle, how many different rectangle shapes can the class make? Each side of the garden will be whole number of feet. In this task students can quickly find one or two answers, but must stay with the task to determine all the possible plots, perhaps organizing their search rather than randomly finding solutions. Telling students how many plots are possible can change the task. The task is more challenging when students are asked to explain how they know they have found all the plots.
