Question:
A Completely stirred tank reactor (CSTR)Is to be designed for continuous production of a chemical. The reaction which is between a liquid (A) and a gas (B) is carried out at 25 C and 5 atm. A compressor is used to provide the gas to the reactor through a ring sparger. The pressure drop of the nozzles on the ring sparger is about 200 kPa. The flow rate of the liquid is 5 m3/min and residence time is 4 minutes. The gas flow rate is 10,000 m3/h at standard condition.
A + B Products
Design the process assuming that the reaction is almost complete. The reaction enthalpy is quite small so that isothermal condition can be assumed.
Calculate the power requirement for the compressor and design the reactor (determine the reactor's dimensions).
The reactor is cylindrical in shape (flat bottom, feel free to choose other configuration).
Select and size an appropriate impeller and calculate mixer power.
A standard reactor can be assumed with four vertical baffles (assume 3 % extra power due to baffles).
Properties of the liquid can be assumed as water.
Properties of the gas can be assumed as of methane.
You can also make assumption if needed followed by your justification.
