A DDOS attack works by:

a) Compromising banking credentials so that the perpetrator can liquidate accounts

b) Changing the passwords to critical system accounts so that they become unusable

c) Encrypting the data on a drive so that it becomes unreadable

d) Overwhelming organizational information resources with a multitude of junk network traffic sent from a collection of compromised devices
