A famous professor put the position that managers should do only the minimum as required by law

in order to minimise costs and maximise profits, in terms of managing pollution, safety and other

aspects in the workplace. His reasoning was that the clearly dominant requirement of managers is

to shareholders/owners, and to provide the highest profits to them that are possible. This view

assumes that other stakeholders are a means to that end. Compare and contrast this position with

that of sustainable development and take a position as to which view is most likely to be associated

with organisational success.
