Even then, the clothes will be passed down to family members and continue to be worn until it is torn, stained or not suitable to be worn anymore. But about 20 years ago, something changed. Clothes became cheaper, trend cycles sped up, and shopping became a hobby. Enter fast fashion and the global chains that now dominate our high streets and online shopping. Some popular multinational and e-commerce brands are Shein, Victoria’s Secret, GAP, Fashion Nova, Uniqlo, Forever 21, and H&M are labelled as fast fashion.

The fast fashion business model has resulted in the clothing industry undergoing a drastic transformation is estimated that between 80 and 100 billion pieces of clothing are produced each year, which is 13 times the global population. The drawback to this lucrative industry is that it contributes to polluting the environment. The fashion industry uses one tenth of all waters consumed by the industry and utilizes synthetic materials that release microplastics into our environment. As people buy more clothes to satisfy their needs, unwanted clothes begin piling up in the landfill and incinerator, causing more damage to the environment.
