A Homemade Education by Malcolm X Study Questions Please read A Homemade Education by Malcolm X (located in your files) and answer the following questions. Please use evidence from the text to support your answers. Be detailed in your answers. It should be obvious you did the reading. 1. Malcolm X states that, "No university would ask any student to devour literature as I did when this new world opened up to me, of being able to read and understand" (65). What point do you think he is trying to make here? Why does he say that a university wouldn't require this of a student? 2. In one of the books in the series that Game of Thrones is based on, George R.R. Martin writes, "A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies... The man who never reads lives only one." Find at least one passage in Malcolm X's text that relates to this quote and discuss the connection. 3. Why do you think Malcolm X spends the first chunk of the text giving the reader details about how he would copy pages from the dictionary and read even after lights out while faking sleep for the guards every hour? What effect did it have on you as a reader? 4. Malcolm X describes Mr. Muhammad's statement about "how history had been 'whitened' [because] when white men had written history books, the black man simply had been left out" as one of the motivating factors behind his reading (66). Use this idea to explain why Malcolm X said he was "really impressed" by the book set The Wonders of the World and why he would buy it for his children. (Reread the paragraph on p. 66 where he mentions these books.) 5. Reread the paragraph on p. 69 which begins "I have often reflected upon the new vistas." What does this tell you about how Malcolm X views education and its purpose? 6. Skimming through the final paragraph of the text, what opinion do you think Malcolm X holds of universities and colleges and the educations they offer? Look carefully at his words before answering. If you told him that you are currently a college student, what do you think he would say to you? Make sure your answer to this question is one that you could use the text to support you on.
