Question: A liquid limit test conducted on a soil sample in a Casagrande cup device gave the following results: _ _ _ _ _ _ _

A liquid limit test conducted on a soil sample in a Casagrande cup device gave the following results:
_____________________________________________
Number of blows 1019232740
Water content (%)60.045.239.836.525.2
____________________________________________________________________
Two determinations for plastic limit gave water contents of 20.3% and 20.9%. The natural water
content of the soil was determined to be 35%. Determine: a) the liquid limit and plastic limit; b)
the plasticity index; c) the liquidity index; and d) the void ratio at the liquid limit (Assume a value
for Gs ). e) If this soil (at its insitu natural water content) were to be loaded, what behaviour would
you expect (brittle, soft and yielding etc.)? f) Plot a plasticity chart and provide the USCS
classification.
