A project scope statement (also known as a statement of work) is a document that explains in measurable terms what the project is going to accomplish. It is usually one to two pages. One of its main purposes is to be used by project participants for planning and evaluating project success. The Main Elements of a Scope Statement 1 Project Objective What you hope to accomplish with this particular project. The project objective needs to be measurable. Example: "To construct a high-quality, custom home within six months at costs not to exceed $ 500,000." These are the major aspects of the project. Example: In a project to renovate the bathroom, the deliverables include demolishing the existing materials in the bathroom and installing new tiles. Deliverables 3 Milestones Milestones can include payments when the project reaches a certain percent completion. They can also include reports or a statement of progress. 4 Technical Technical requirements must be specified in measurable terms. Requirements Limits and exclusions must be specific to prevent scope creep. Scope creep occurs when a little extra is added to the project, but no schedule or budget is included. Example: In renovating a washroom, an exclusion could be that the bathtub will not be replaced. In building a custom home, an exclusion could be that air conditioning will not be installed. 5 Limits and Exclusions As a project manager, there needs to be frequent and full communication with the customer. Note that some scope statements include product scope description, justification, and other elements. For the purposes of this assignment, these additional elements are optional.

Examples of projects which can require a scope statement include, but are not limited to, the following: renovating a bathroom, building a custom house, building a hockey arena etc.
