A researcher is preparing a randomized controlled experiment where subjects will be randomly assigned to one of two groups, and then correspondingly be either given a cookie or whacked in the head with a foam pool noodle. All subjects will then take a standardized test. The researcher hopes to see a difference in test scores between the two groups; based on an estimate of the effect size obtained from pilot data, the project's statistician says that they will need 25 subjects in each group to have 80% power under the usual test of two means paradigm.
