A steel bar of 10 mm X 40 mm cross section is sandwiched between two aluminium bars of the same cross sectional dimensions for two thirds of its length, and is restrained at the two ends as shown in Figure 12. All three bars are connected by a pin of 8 mm diameter at one end of the aluminium bars, and clamped at the other end. The pin is subject to two 10 kN loads, applied symmetrically causing a centric axial force in the bars. The elastic moduli of steel and aluminium may be taken as 70 GPa and 210 GPa respectively. Determine: 

• the maximum tensile and compressive stress in the bars and 
• the maximum shear stress in the pin
