Question: A student comment from another group: While competitive benchmarking may help you meet your competitors performance, it is unlikely to reveal techniques for beating them
A student comment from another group: "While competitive benchmarking may help you meet your competitors" performance, it is unlikely to reveal techniques for beating them" This statement is key to this discussion and the conclusion that should be made!! Excellent. Because we are talking workflow, we know the result the benchmark value but not the recipe to get it This is why it is difficult to copy them. We can't see or know the recipe. Reminds me of pie crust. I have a Great Aunt who is a master for her pie crusts. She has so many variations for fruit pie vs pumpkin vs cream. I never baked with her, and can not repeat her recipes. I needed to study along side her to understand how she does it When it comes to competitive advantages, even when you know the recipe it may not work. Maybe the altitude is off, or the water is different. Think back to the Discussion Question that had Home Depot show up on the horror list. They hired an experienced leader who knew the recipe, but the recipe didn't work in application at Home Depot. When the 'secret' lies in the workflow and culture, it can be hard to repeat.
