A theory, in simple terms, is $\text{'}$an explanation.$\text{'}$ It just describes why we think something happens, or an explanation for a phenomenon. A more formal definition is that a theory is$...$ a set of concepts and the relation between them to explain a pheonmenon of interest. For example, If I want to explain why one team is more motivated $($phenomenon of interest$),$ I might use 'autonomy' $($another concept; that says if you get to decide or have more input into how you perform tasks, as opposed to being told exactly what to do with no input from you, you will be more motivated$).$ The relation might be that as autonomy increases, so does motivation. My theory $($explanation$)$ for why one team is more motivated than another will be more motivated. Do you see how that is an explanation as well as a set of concepts $($autonomy$,$ motivation$)$ and the relation between them $($as one increases so does the other$)?$
