The primary purpose and scope of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is to grant societal rights to all Americans with disabilities. ADA had prevented discrimination against this group of people as well as require accommodations to be made for them. The overall goal was to go beyond treating disabled individuals like any other person and instead provide them the means necessary for them to participate within society. ADA wanted to protect people with disabilities from discrimination and enforce public accommodations (Erickson, et al. 2018).

Within ADA were five different titles that specified which areas of society should be accessible for disabled individuals. One of which were employment, where discrimination against disabled individuals was prohibited and allow the workplace to modified to suit their needs. Another title of note are public accommodations, an example being a ramp to allow handicapped individuals a way to enter the building or restrooms having a stall with enough space for their wheelchair (Job Accommodation Network, 2012).

It is important to have these tenets in place because disabled individuals cannot be treated as anyone else. Being disabled is not the same as race or sex, where those aspects should not determine whether you treat someone differently or not, one has to treat disabled individuals to their liking. If someone was in a wheelchair, that cannot be ignored, those people face struggles in traversing such as walking up stairs. This can also apply to mental health, given that some people might have a harder time handling their disorders than others, it is important to present awareness of such for the individual to feel more comfortable.
