A vertical sheet pile retaining wall is $9\mathrm{.}75$ m high and supports a $6\mathrm{.}5$ m excavation. The soil profile revealed a $4\mathrm{.}5$ m surface layer of medium clay with a unit weight of $11$ kN$/$m$^3$ and drained shear strength parameters $($c$,)$ of $12$ kPa, $27$ over an extensive layer of stiff clay with a unit weight of $17$ kN$/$m$^3$ and drained shear strength parameters $($c$,)$ of $14$ kPa, $17.$ It is anticipated that the excavated material will form a surcharge of $14\mathrm{.}5$ kPa at the surface of the retained soil.
