Monica and her husband and children arrived in Australia six months ago after spending several years in a refugee camp in Nigeria, during which time one of their children died. Monica's husband was trained as an engineer but now works as a hospital cleaner. Monica does not speak English as her first language and her 10-year-old daughter is often required to translate for her. The family lives in a high-rise apartment in an inner city area. Monica does not work outside the home. Recently she has lost a lot of weight. Her husband is concerned about her. He took her to a GP who thought that Monica might be depressed. The GP suggested that she join a community centre for migrant women. Programs at the centre include cooking and craft activities. There are playgroups for the younger children. The centre also provides English language classes. Monica has opted to participate in the cooking, crafts and English language groups, but it is likely that she will require additional support.
