Many business students, especially attheundergraduate level, find these black-box-rules confusing. In recent years, several articles have appeared intheaccounting literature, exploringthelink betweenthealgebraic foundations andtheenumerationofitems inthestatementofcashflows. In this paper, an explanation is provided, through an analysisofthebasicalgebraic equationofthebalance sheet, fortheblack-box-rulesoftheindirect method in a simple and concise manner.
