Abstract

In this rapidly changing global environment, where organizations often lack diversity and ethical guidance, most are vulnerable to leadership failure during a crisis triggered by a confluence of factors within the workspace. This Applied Project Proposal (APP) is a product of rigorous scholarship and research developed through a doctorate program in Global Leadership. It examines how this program's insights can be applied to initiate ethical practices in organizational scenarios. The project focuses on 'Ethical Crisis Leadership', while also emphasizing elements such as moral courage, socially inclusive decision-making, and benefit-oriented communication. Built on conceptual frameworks such as 'Giving Voice to Values' and key concepts from crisis leadership literature, the proposal outlines a plan for shifting systems to create a better future in the workplace within ethically stagnant institutions. The goal is to show leaders how to act professionally and appropriately, not only during high-stakes moments, but also while organizational cultures are rooted in truth, integrity, accountability, and diversity. Through case-based application and evidence-informed practices, the proposed intervention not only demonstrates the critical link between ethical leadership and organizational resilience in times of crisis but also the potential to create a more positive and ethical future in the workplace.

Introduction

Many organizations face ethical challenges and even a decline in moral behavior, as well as issues related to diversity, while struggling to find practical leadership guidance, especially during this crisis. These social challenges often manifest when leaders lack the development to lead such events or processes with moral courage, socially inclusive decision-making, and benefit-oriented communication (Riggio & Newstead, 2022). This Applied Project Proposal (APP) draws on theories from peer reviews, guidebooks, scholarly discussions, and ethical videos to develop a conceptual framework for fostering ethical leadership practices in times of crisis. This research also provides a framework to address further challenges in organizations.

The project draws from Giving Voice to Value (GVV), an educational approach by Gentile (2017), which guides individuals in acting professionally and appropriately. It does so by placing a strong emphasis on moral courage, a key component of values-based action. As lifelong learners, we understand and demonstrate appropriate conduct, justice, accountability, inclusion, transparency, and integrity, all of which are essential for a moral leader and crucial for gaining trust and respect within the organization's workforce (Stavropoulou et al., 2023). The Center for Ethical Leadership (2002) highlights these as key core values for organizational transformation, and it is our responsibility to uphold them.

This project, with its tangible connections to the real world, is inspired by values that we all hold firmgrounded in truth and justiceto promote ethical thinking that supports diversity and long-term resilience during organizational crises. The leadership guidance is inspired by Tillich's (2000) concept of "courage to be" and Singer's (2001) writings on an ethical life, aligning with our shared values.

Through a case-based and evidence-informed approach, this APP aims to provide a practical intervention for ethically stagnant institutions that applies leadership theory to the workplace, resulting in measurable improvements in ethical behavior and decision-making.

Problem Statement

Many workspaces face a progressive decline in their ability to respond professionally and legally in times of crisis. This performance often stems from a lack of decision-making responses, normative power, and a failure to collaborate, as developed by Riggio and Newstead (2022, p. 202). As polycrisis is becoming more frequent due to misconduct, leaders are reluctant to exhibit values such as integrity, accountability, and justice in unpredictable cases. Stavropoulou et al. (2023) argue that organizations with weak ethical principles struggle to achieve their goals as they lack leaders who discover and promote ethical practices in social environments. Furthermore, the GVV conceptual framework developed by Gentile (2010) highlights a moral gap between talking about what is right and walking the talk, especially when institutional rules and expectations are left unquestioned. Without an appropriate ethical leader, things can quickly spiral out of control into various situations, from personal problems like drug addiction or mental health to long-term unemployment issues like poverty or crime. This project addresses the need for leadership practices that prioritize ethical reasoning and moral courage in times of crisis, empowering leaders to guide their organizations and educational activities with transparency, fairness, and inclusivity.
