Abusive Supervision is a term that refers to "subordinates' perceptions of the extent to which their supervisors engage in the sustained display of hostile verbal and nonverbal behaviors, excluding physical contact." Tepper (2000) found that abusive supervision is related to lower employee job satisfaction and psychological distress (i.e. depression and burnout). However, does an abusive supervisor motivate employees to perform at a higher level (even if the employees may have lower job satisfaction)? In other words, do employees put in more effort and work harder to please an abusive supervisor?
